Danai Gurira

What drew me first to this look was not the color necessarily, but rather the contrast between her hair and the black in her dress. The shapes in her hairpiece and provided by the black on her bodice actually are very visually similar, but not so alike as to match completely. The subtle pattern on her dress almost makes us think of gold foil, and while it might look like a wrinkled mess on anyone else, she wears this gown particularly well.

If there’s one complaint, it’s that the sash wrapped around her waist shows a bit of the gold peeking through, and that’s a little distracting.

This fuchsia creation probably ranks up there with Constance Wu’s yellow gown as one of the brightest on the red carpet, but Angela Bassett apparently did not even care that her gown might be a touch wrinkled. She still looked fantastic, and again, there’s a lot of excellent visual balancing going on here between the shoulder piece, the small train, and the slit. We also dig her ponytail and the waves it has, since they provide some visual contrast to the slightly different structures present in her gown.

That clutch, by the way, is fantastic. What a cool shape, even if we don’t know what you could possibly fit inside it.
