Octavia Spencer

The structure in this bodice is glorious. It’s just so well-fitted that it makes a writer weep for joy even before you get to just how great Octavia Spencer specifically looks in this dress. There’s support, there’s definition, and then there’s a big, fabulous skirt to complement the volume in her sleeves. The sparkle adds glamour without overshadowing the overall feel of this look, and honestly, it’s the Oscars. A little sparkle is not outside the realm of possibility or even acceptability.

We also appreciate the pops of greens in her accessories; between those and the sparkle, the rich color is complemented nicely and lightened up a bit while still serving the drama.

Constance Wu

What a change in color, right? We’ve gone from one of the richest of blues to the brightest of yellows. While Constance Wu’s gown picks up some of the trends in terms of volume and motion (see what we said about being able to just enjoy Helen Mirren’s picture all day, and then apply it here as well), this was one of the brightest colors on the red carpet.

Now, to be fair, it is still wintertime, but this dress, more than even Marie Kondo’s, reminds us that spring is coming. The sleek hair is also really working for us here, since it lets the dress and those accessories do the talking. We also dig the detailing on the neckline.
