Hannah Beachler

The first Black person — not just woman, person — to be nominated for a Best Production Design Oscar did not disappoint in her appearance on the red carpet (and she won, to boot). The structure and drama of the pouf is picked up in her hairstyle, but the one-shoulder style and the slit keep it from being too overstyled. Same with the small train.

The pink lining is something of an interesting choice, but the visual contrast doesn’t hurt, especially with the black shoes and clutch to add some grounding to this ensemble. (They’re sparkly, though. We have to respect that.)

Domee Shi

Bao producer Becky Neiman-Cobb looks great, but Domee Shi has a fantastic gown that this writer, personally, covets despite knowing she can’t afford it. Because the overlay is the source of the pattern, and the solid color beneath coordinates so well, she had room to be interesting with her accessories while still presenting a clean look. The clutch, in particular, is a great choice, since it picks up some of the circular motions of the dress’ pattern without repeating them exactly. Although the celestial pattern could easily overwhelm, we think the slits really help it here, and the belt adds some visual weight.
