Yalitza Aparicio

No, she didn’t take home an Oscar for her first major acting role in Roma, although the movie as a whole did win some big awards. But Yalitza Aparicio still looks like she’s Hollywood-ready. Her gown’s basically mint green, which isn’t a color that shows up often. And while so many went strapless or full gown, she opted for the one-shoulder look.

The subtle detailing is nice, too; there’s a dreamily pretty look about this, and sometimes, that’s what’s best for an up-and-coming star. We also dig the choices in her jewelry.

Director Nadine Labaki also opted for the one-shoulder look, albeit with a full sleeve instead of going sleeveless. This is basically on the opposite end of the spectrum from Yalitza Aparicio, but they still get paired together here because they provoke the same word from this writer, just in different tones: “Wow.”

Here, the wow is for the architecture and the drama of this look; this woman directed a movie, Capernaum, which won a Grand Jury Prize at Cannes and deals with some seriously weighty subjects. No, she didn’t actually win the Oscar (Roma did), but to show up looking dressed like this is a statement all on its own. Brava.
