Demi Lovato is one who has been consistently open about her struggle with bipolar disorder and substance abuse, and even more so now after being hospitalized for an overdose last summer. She has been claimed to be a “rare gift” for the world of mental health for being so forthcoming about her struggle.

Lovato was the spokesperson for the “Be Vocal: Speak for Mental Health” campaign in 2015 and spoke to Women’s Health about why she decided to make her illness public.

"I remember sitting with my manager and my family and talking to them about whether or not to speak out about the issues that I was dealing with. I knew that there were two options. […] I could either not talk about my stint in rehab and hope that it went away, or I could talk about it and inspire people to get help for their issues, as well, so that’s exactly what I did."

Since then, she’s been a leading voice in the fight to end the stigma against mental health issues. She’s been a beacon of hope for not only her fans, but for everyone struggling to make it through each day.

Lovato had a choice back in 2015, and that was to either be silent, or to be loud. She took the path less traveled and offered a helping hand to so many in need at that point. She’s considered to be one of the main celebrities who have sparked the movement for others to speak up about mental health.
