First look at Harley Quinn in Birds of Prey teases big changes

Margot Robbie’s Instagram picture and the Birds of Prey teaser trailer tease some possible changes in Harley Quinn’s life, and none of them involve the Joker.

Harley Quinn may be notorious for being the Joker’s gal pal and criminal right-hand, but the upcoming Birds of Prey movie is starting to look like it will feature a Harley unlike one we’ve ever known.
For one, Margot Robbie gave us a first glance at the new Harley Quinn via Instagram looking snazzy while sporting a hot pink ensemble with a glitter pom-pom inspired jacket. While the outfit doesn’t say much about Quinn’s upcoming journey in Birds of Prey, it does indicate that dramatic changes are coming to the Quinn we first saw in Suicide Squad.

The most promising clue of this teaser is the bone shaped choker with the name “Bruce” that Quinn wears around her neck. The obvious conclusion is that Quinn is wearing a chain dedicated to Bruce Wayne, who is Batman.

This makes us wonder if Quinn has ditched the Joker and set her sight on a new crush since Quinn’s choker in Suicide Squad said “Puddin” — as a declaration of her love for Joker. Also, it brings up whether Quinn is aware that Wayne is Batman, though the likelihood is slim. My theory is that the bone shape may indicate that Quinn now has a dog she named after Wayne which still suggests she has a crush on the billionaire mogul.

A Birds of Prey teaser trailer also popped up on the internet with the clever tag “See you soon,” revealing some quick glimpses of Mary Elizabeth Winstead and Jurnee Smollett-Bell who play Huntress and Black Canary. The clip also captures Ewan McGregor, who will play Black Mask, wearing shades.

And at the very end, Quinn is spotted wearing the same glitter pom-pom outfit while laughing it up and having a drink.

The one thing that was nowhere to be found was, in fact, the Joker. And given Quinn’s happy attitude, it may be for the better. Birds of Prey may turn out to be about an all-girl team doing what they do best without the male accompaniment just like the comic.

Given that the full title of the movie, Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn), it suggests that Quinn will be freeing herself from something. And it may just be free from a life of crime and the Joker.

If the Birds of Prey film ends up showing how Quinn lets go of her abusive boyfriend and dysfunctional relationship to kick bad guy butt, then this movie has my full support. It will be a fantastic development to see Quinn’s character come into her own without the clown wearing her down.

Birds of Prey is set to hit theatres on Feb. 7, 2020.
