Brianna considers vengeance while everyone else prepares for battle in the penultimate episode of Outlander’s fourth season.

Concrete plot details are sparse, but here’s something we know for sure about “Providence,” the last episode of Outlander season 4 until the finale: Brianna reads the letter from Jamie that John Grey delivered last week.

“I’ve been thinking about your question of whether revenge would heal the wrong done to you,” Jamie intones during the teaser. “I advise you now that you must not seek it.”

That’s advice Bree apparently is having trouble heeding. Bonnet has been arrested and she finally has a chance to make him pay for the assault. The question is whether her desire for retaliation will win out over Jamie’s counsel. Also worth asking: After that grand speech, is Jamie still planning to kill Bonnet to avenge his daughter?

Here’s the synopsis for “Providence,” courtesy of Starz:

"While the Mohawk encourage Roger to become one of their own, he struggles to assimilate into the tribe and puts his ability to survive at risk. With support from one of Jamie’s old friends, Brianna returns to Wilmington to confront a violent figure from her past in an attempt to find some peace."

Roger is at a crossroads himself. He’s torn between becoming a part of the Mohawk, not just their prisoner, and his vow to return to his wife. With all that he’s been through, I can’t help but wonder whether he, like Brianna, will be inspired to take revenge against those who have wronged him (i.e. beaten him senseless and sold him). Should the Frasers find him, his future relationship with his father-in-law will be uneasy, to say the least.

As for the rest of the Outlander gang, everyone seems to be readying themselves for battle. The promo sees Fergus marching with solemn purpose and skulking around corners. Murtagh, who is also in jail, is deep in thought, probably musing about how he’ll ever get out of this jam. Jamie is wielding a rifle and looking grim.

With all the focus on revenge, justice and morality this episode, I’m fairly confident the characters’ road to “Providence” will be mighty tricky.
