Right on the heels of Murtagh’s grand return, “Blood of My Blood” welcomes back a couple other long-lost Outlander characters.

Looks like Brianna isn’t the only Fraser kid making their way back to Claire and Jamie. This week’s Outlander, “Blood of My Blood,” will see Jamie reunited with his illegitimate son, Willie, and his old friend, John Grey.

In case things weren’t complicated enough, Grey is in love with Jamie and has raised Willie like a son. Willie’s late mother’s sister is married to Grey. (Well, what do you expect? Outlander is a romance-fantasy drama after all.)

Here’s the episode synopsis, courtesy of Starz:

"Jamie and Claire are surprised when Lord John Grey drops in on Fraser’s Ridge with an unexpected traveling companion. When Grey contracts the measles, Claire must reconcile her personal feelings about the man with her duties as a doctor."

And let’s not forget Murtagh, a close family friend of Jamie and Claire, has just returned. No matter its flaws — and I’m sure there will be flaws — “Blood of My Blood” looks like it will be one memorable family reunion.

If Outlander would just let this episode be about Jamie’s love for his son and his desire to tell Willie who he really is, then I’d be psyched. But, unfortunately, the episode is going to include yet another half-baked storyline about the Frasers’ Cherokee neighbors. The episode promo shows Willie mistakenly offending the Cherokee, who decide to make him “pay” for his transgression.

How many times have we seen this plot development at this point? Outlander keeps flirting with a thoughtful story about the Cherokee but can’t quite make things official. We get time-traveling ghosts, conflicts that are more about the colonizers than the colonized, and friendships that end as quickly as they begin. But we’re not getting a storyline that says anything of value about the Cherokee of the 1770s — and that’s what we need.

If nothing else, the series seems genuinely interested in the Native American experience and its place in Claire and Jamie’s world. It’s time Outlander made good on that interest with something concrete and meaningful.
