Doctor Who season 11 premiere live stream: Watch online
By Lacy Baugher
It’s finally time: The first female Doctor ever will debut on Doctor Who this weekend. Here’s everything you need to know to watch “The Woman Who Fell to Earth” online.
After over a year of waiting – or 55 of them if you’re counting all of Doctor Who history, which we probably should – it’s finally time. A woman will play the Doctor.
Technically, actress Jodie Whittaker officially debuted as the Thirteenth incarnation of the renegade Time Lord in last year’s Christmas installment, “Twice Upon a Time.” But, she appeared for maybe a minute, and spoke two words before getting jettisoned out of the TARDIS.
Forgive me if I think that hardly counts.
The seaon 11 premiere will mark Whittaker’s first full episode as the Doctor, and the start of a new era for the iconic sci-fi series. Not only will the TARDIS have a woman at the helm for the first time, the Doctor will run around the universe with three new companions, a first for the series since the Fifth Doctor/Peter Davison era. It’s getting a new showrunner, with an apparent zeal for change and accessibility. (Chris Chibnall has promised that Whittaker’s tenure will offer an easy access point for lapsed viewers and new fans.) And it’s got an increasingly diverse behind the scenes crew, including the series’ first official writers of color.
In short, this is all a very big deal, and we should be very excited.
The official BBC synopsis for the premiere reads as follows:
"‘We don’t get aliens in Sheffield.’ In a South Yorkshire city, Ryan Sinclair, Yasmin Khan and Graham O’Brien are about to have their lives changed for ever, as a mysterious woman, unable to remember her own name, falls from the night sky. Can they believe a word she says? And can she help solve the strange events taking place across the city?"
Basically, “The Woman Who Fell to Earth” will pick up right where “Twice Upon a Time” left off, with Thirteen plummeting through the sky and the TARDIS in flames. How will she survive? (Because of course she will.) How will the TARDIS reappear? (Because it better.)
We don’t have much longer to wait to find out.
