Joaquin Phoenix as Doctor Strange

Benedict Cumberbatch has left his mark on the role, and probably brought a lot of new fans to the MCU since his role in Sherlock had such a big following. But, this character could have looked very different.

Joaquin Phoenix might seem like a bit of a strange choice for a superhero movie, but it turns out that he actually is interested in these roles. He was in talks with Marvel to play Doctor Strange at one point. Things didn’t work out, so that gave Phoenix the opportunity to play the Joker in the 2019 film, Joker.

Benedict Cumberbatch has been able to bring charm and sarcasm to the role of Doctor Strange, and while Joaquin Phoenix is a great actor, for sure, it is strange to think of him in the MCU. But, with how big the MCU is and how it continues to grow, maybe he will end up being another character in the franchise at some point. Fans are still waiting to hear more news about Doctor Strange and a sequel movie, but we are overall pretty glad that Cumberbatch ended up getting the role.
