Taran Killam revealed that his wife, Cobie Smulders, spilled the beans about her part in Infinity War. Luckily, the spoiler didn’t reveal too much.
You might think that being married to a star of the Avengers comes with a few of perks. Okay, we’re sure it comes with a ton of perks, but there might be one teeny tiny downside: they can totally spoil the movie for you before you see it.
That downside might not be a complete dealbreaker for some, but it’s still likely to happen. Take Taran Killam, for instance, who was told about Infinity War’s ending while it was still filming.
Speaking to The Fandom Files podcast from SyFy, the former Saturday Night Live star revealed that his wife, Cobie Smulders (who plays Maria Hill), got a little too excited about her role and revealed just enough to him to spoil the ending. Perhaps the only upside to it was that he wasn’t sure what any of it meant. Killam said on the podcast:
"Infinity War was the first time where she let me know what was going to happen. Her tag was added on later in the schedule. She’s like, ‘Yeah, I’m there and then I disappear?’ I was like, ‘God, what does this mean? What does this mean?’"
Luckily, Killam didn’t exactly know what her scene meant when she told him the big reveal. Smulder’s post-credits scene as Hill in Infinity War’s was a quick one shared with Samuel L. Jackson. She and Nick Fury begin to witness lives being blown away after Thanos’ snap. Eventually, she and Fury disappear too, but not before getting the chance to contact Captain Marvel.
If you don’t know that Thanos is going to end up with all the Infinity Stones to wipe out half the universe, then the reveal spoils very little about the movie. But if you’re savvy about the Infinity War storyline, then a few alarm bells are bound to go off.
Despite the teaser of a spoiler Smulders told him, Killam also shared a sweet story for when Smulders was first auditioning for the Avengers:
"I remember when Cobie first told me she was auditioning for the first Avengers. Just that was enough to get me so excited. [I was like] ‘Do you want me to read with you? We should rehearse again, right? Let’s do it one more time. What’s she going to wear?’… She actually snuck me a little illegal photo from the screen test. She did a screen test with about four or five other actresses."
It seems like Killam should be careful about what he says, because he just might be put his wife up there on Marvel’s “to watch” list. She’ll be in comfortable company with the likes of Tom Holland, Mark Ruffalo, and even Evangeline Lilly, but it’s always good to have Marvel’s trust. If not, we’re guessing Marvel’s punishment involves receiving multiple dummy scripts to read over and over until you finally learn your lesson.
We do have one request from Taran Killam or Cobie Smulders if they’re down for sharing spoilers: what’s Maria Hill doing in Spider-Man: Far From Home? We’re glad to know Maria’s still in the MCU after Infinity War‘s ending. But like Killam, we’re asking ourselves, “What does this mean?”
