Game of Thrones season 8 spoilers: The end of an era?

Have things really come to a close for a major star of Game of Thrones? Fans seem to think so, but what does that mean for their character?

Warning: There’s a strong possibility that we might have the biggest Game of Thrones season 8 spoiler so far here.

All along, the cast of Game of Thrones has spoken about how much this show has come to mean to them over the past seasons. Emilia Clarke is just the most recent among them. However, we’re not talking about the woman behind the Mother of Dragons today. Instead, we’re talking about someone we want to see Daenerys work with in season 8: Sansa Stark.

On Tuesday, May 15, Sophie Turner sent out a very cryptic tweet.

That tweet looks like this:

While some are taking it to mean that Game of Thrones has actually finished filming, that’s almost certainly not the case. As our sister site, Winter is Coming, has reported, the production in Spain won’t even end for another few days — and the crew will be there longer than that. That’s to say nothing of other production.

But what it could mean is that Turner herself is done, and that whatever she’s doing in Spain now only needs the presence of her body double. Since those reports, as we note in the previous link, we’ve wondered if Sansa may need a body double in order to play a death scene or a death-by-dragon scene, more specifically. The fact that Turner appears to have wrapped up her work means that that scenario is now looking more and more likely.

Should we prepare our hearts now to say good-bye to Sansa, presumably after almost a full season? Will she be one of the last Starks standing, only to just barely miss surviving the entire series?

We’ve said it before that Sansa endures, but there have already been theories that she wouldn’t endure this last set of challenges. Symbolically, it would even make sense. Sansa is the only living Stark who doesn’t have a secondary identity. While Arya’s come back to herself, she also has training as a Faceless Man. Jon Snow is Aegon Targaryen. Bran Stark is the Three-Eyed Raven.

And while the Stark words may be “Winter is Coming,” we’ve also heard “the lone wolf dies, but the pack survives.” Right now, if you think about it, Sansa could be considered a lone wolf. Though she poses as Alayne Stone while she’s with Littlefinger in seasons 4 and 5, that doesn’t last long, and she doesn’t currently hold that name as well. Indeed, she even orchestrates the death of the source of that name.

Perhaps we’re getting worried for nothing. However, this is Game of Thrones, and we’ve learned to take nothing for granted.
