Westworld season 2 episode 3 live stream: Watch online
By Amy Woolsey
The robot revolution continues, and at some point, a Bengal tiger shows up. Culturess has all the information you need on tonight’s Westworld episode.
Last week, Westworld took a trip down memory lane. Far from superfluous, the glimpses of the past that “Reunion” provided — Dolores visiting the city, William convincing Delos to invest in the park, Logan descending into drugs and alcoholism — hint at what the future has in store. Let’s just say things aren’t looking good for the human race.
That (inevitable?) future draws closer in episode 3. An ominously titled trailer promises tons of action, as Dolores continues her bloody rampage. Does her take-no-prisoners mentality extend to her fellow hosts as well as her former oppressors? “The truth is,” she says, “we don’t all deserve to make it.” To whom does “we” refer?
Read the official synopsis for “Virtù e Fortuna” below:
"There is beauty in who we are. Shouldn’t we, too, try to survive?"
Rather than try to extract meaning from that characteristically cryptic description, let’s look at the episode title. In his notorious essay The Prince, Niccolò Machiavelli uses the concept of virtù to encompass the qualities of a good leader. Crucially, virtù differs from virtue (or the qualities of a good person), involving a certain amount of ruthlessness.
Meanwhile, Fortuna is the ancient Roman goddess of luck, depicted as mysterious, fickle, and arbitrary. For Machiavelli, the term represents circumstances beyond human control. He believes leaders should accept the role fortuna plays in their success and use it to their advantage through virtù. In other words, leadership requires one to balance fate with free will — a conflict at the core of Westworld.
Stay tuned to see whether Dolores lives up to Machiavelli’s standards of a good leader.
