The season 5 premiere of The 100 ended with some shocking footage of Octavia’s reign in the underground bunker. This week’s episode will take us back in time to fill in the gaps.

The first episode of The 100‘s fifth season filled fans in on the characters’ exploits during the six years following the Death Wave. Most of the episode detailed Clarke’s time wandering a desolate Earth, with brief glimpses of Bellamy’s crew in space. The details of Octavia’s rule beneath the ground, however, remained shrouded in mystery — at least, until the very end of the episode.

During the final scene of “Eden,” two grounders fight one another in a gladiator style pit beneath Octavia’s throne. And Octavia, a leader who once preached peace among the 13 clans, watches with an expression bordering indifference. It was an eerie clip to say the least.

That things have gone so awry within the bunker proved a shocking reveal for viewers. Fans expected Clarke to struggle on her own, and we predicted a number of difficulties surviving in space. By comparison, the bunker seemed like the safest place to ride out the remaining radiation.

Tonight’s episode, “Red Queen,” should provide much needed answers to the questions raised by the premiere’s cliffhanger. The title itself alludes to Octavia, and the preview shows clips of her struggle to maintain her command.

There’s also the official synopsis of the episode, which reads:

"Octavia is forced to take guidance from an unlikely ally when the future of the bunker and all those inside it is jeopardized."

Judging by the preview, Octavia’s “unlikely ally” is Thelonious Jaha. But what’s causing all the turmoil among the remaining survivors remains a mystery.

Can all of this be due to overpopulation, or are there other factors “jeopardizing” One Kru? We’ll need to keep watching to find out.
