Grown-ish (Costume designer: Michelle R. Cole)

Think bold block patterns, sleek sneakers and chunky accessories when it comes to Grown-ish!  The show takes places in California, so it’s fitting that everyone’s style teeters on the edge of wild, loud and super chill. I’m not sure any of us ever looked so stylish walking into an early sociology class, but whatever, I’m in.  Each character dresses so unique to their personality that sometimes you don’t even notice they’re wearing sequined pants.

Let’s start with the main character, Zoey Johnstone, and her look.  The girl has class, but unlike her younger self on the show’s predecessor, Black-ish, she’s branching out and finding her style. Costume designer Michelle Cole specifically talked about this in interviews as a focus for her costumes. Zoey is often found in collared shirts, cute sundresses and blazers. However she tends to mix her preppy look, with something reminiscent of Lisa Bonet in her college years.

If Zoey isn’t your style icon, then there are plenty of other characters to choose from. For example, Nomi Segal, a cool girl whose grunge-inspired and rather cool “I don’t care” style is on point. On the other side of the spectrum, Ana Torres’s feminine attire will have us all wanting to be president.

One of the styling techniques Cole uses for this show is to pair high-end items with basic everyday staples found at Target. That means we can all rock these looks. Pair some vintage Chanel tops (or knockoffs) with a pair of overalls from Forever 21 and you’re killing it!
