The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel (Costume designer: Donna Zakowska)

This show may as well be about clothing. Sure, it’s supposedly about a young woman who becomes a comedian but really there seems to be a subplot all about shoes, hats and gloves.

Miriam Maisel is one of the most well put together characters on television, or, well, streaming, since this is an Amazon Video original show. She wears rich colors and perfectly tailored 1950s dresses. Miriam, who lives in a swanky building in Manhattan, seems to have a humongous closet. Her jackets all match her hats, and her shoes all match her purses. Also fun is that fact that Miriam wouldn’t be caught dead without a pair of gloves.

Eventually Miriam starts working in a department store. If you’re obsessed with fashion history, nothing is more orgasmic than a peek at classic department stores, even if they’re in period pieces and not actual historical photos. Shows do their research these days. (If this is your thing, be sure to check out The Paradise. The department stores of the 1950s are much more elegant than those of today.)

Watching The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel feels like walking into a fashion editorial, but with sales clerks to grab you everything you see.
