The Tudors — Showtime

What it is: The Tudors is a soapy, dramatic editorial about the early life of Henry VIII that is salacious, sexy and (mostly) historical. Jonathan Rhys Meyers in his breakout role, plays the young king, and will forever be trapped (in my brain, at least) as the over-sexed and spoiled monarch. While it mostly focuses on Henry’s infamous love life, it dips into the politics and power struggles facing the royal family in England in the 1500s.

Henry dispenses with Catherine of Aragon and Anne Boleyn in the ways we remember from our high school history class, but it takes its time getting us to invest in their machinations of their relationships. Everything I currently know about royal British history, I learned from The Tudors, although I’m pretty sure the real Henry wasn’t as dashing and alluring as Rhys Myers.

Why you’ll like it: Aside from all the steamy sex scenes, the politics and intrigue are so complex that you’ll totally be reminded of all the goings on in Westeros. There is nonstop betrayal, whispered conspiracies and people plotting for more power. Once you add in all the beautiful costumes and sweeping shots of the Irish countryside, you might just think you are watching Game of Thrones. There’re enough power struggles to keep you just on the edge of confused, but enough shirtless knights and heaving bosoms to keep you bingeing all night.

Where to find it: You can watch all four seasons on Netflix.
