Preacher — AMC

What it is: Preacher is a tongue-in-cheek adaptation of the popular graphic novel that is a healthy mix of supernatural thriller, rowdy shoot ’em up and fun buddy comedy. Dominic Cooper plays Jesse Custer, a prodigal son returning home to take over his father’s country church in a small Texas town. He struggles to connect with his congregation, but then he receives a special power. As a result, he has to face a handful of folks who are drawn to the new force within in him.

Surrounded by his childhood girlfriend Tulip (Ruth Negga) and a cheeky Irish vampire Cassidy (Joe Gilgun), they leave the church to find out more about the new power within him. The chemistry between the three characters crackles right off the screen, and it’s probably the best part of the show — aside from all the badass stuff Tulip gets to do. The show is funny and quirky, and features some pretty extraordinary special effects and stunts.

Why you’ll like it:  Just like Game of Thrones, it goes full-throttle and doesn’t apologize for what might be considered over the top or too much. Preacher embraces its hyperbole and often just doubles down on how far out it can be. Neither show is moored in its own reality, so you can just let go and have fun with what’s unfolding on screen. It’s also set in some pretty fun places, and you get to see our threesome blow up a lot of stuff, do some insane car chases and go through some amazing fight choreography.

Where to find it: Seasons 1 and 2 are on Hulu.
