Will Mulder and Scully meet their end at the hands of menacing drones? We’ll learn more soon on “Rm9sbG93ZXJzm,” the latest episode of The X-Files.

Are the machines finally coming for Mulder and Scully? They’ve tried before, whether operating on their own or controlled by some menacing human. But those were generally the ’90s when it felt like the internet ran at the speed of cold molasses. You could conceivably escape an evil computer by unplugging your modem.

Sure, the kind-of evil Maitreya in “First Person Shooter” was hard to escape. That said, one wonders if a simple act of turning the power off and then on again would have fixed things.

But how will our favorite FBI duo fare in the world of Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and ultra high-speed connections? Add on the fact it’s much harder to escape surveillance thanks to our daily saturation in wireless tech.

At least this episode confirms my ever-present fear of drones. Yes, getting packages delivered that way is probably very convenient, but there’s something eerie about those steady green lights staring back at you.

If you’re even vaguely familiar with technological horror, you know that things can go off the rails quickly. In clumsy hands, a tale of this type will seem dated by next month. Thanks to the lightning speed of technological development, will Scully and Mulder’s run-in with drones seem prescient or preposterous?

Will director Glen Morgan be able to transcend the clichés of technological horror? Hopefully so. We’ll see what he, along with writers Shannon Hamblin and Kristen Cloke, are able to concoct.

Here’s the synopsis for “Rm9sbG93ZXJz”, courtesy of TV Guide:

"In a world of ever-increasing automation and artificial intelligence, Mulder and Scully find themselves targets in a deadly game of cat-and-mouse."

What are all of these machines with glowing red lights up to? Is there a person or group of people behind the technology? Or, dare we dream that The X-Files will dive deep into a story with fully sentient AI?

To be honest, we can’t even be sure if this will be a silly episode or a serious one. Is Mulder going to tangle with a murderous coffee machine? Still, the preview indicates a more serious tone. Here’s hoping that “Rm9sbG93ZXJz” won’t be so serious that it can’t play with its own genre conventions.
