After last week’s focus on death, grief, and depression, Victoria lightens up a bit with a royal French vacation in “Entente Cordiale.”

If there’s a better way to get over a funk than traveling to rich people’s France, I’m not aware of it.  In this week’s Victoria the royal couple make their way to King Louis Philippe’s court for business and pleasure.

It’s not all fun and games, though. As the episode preview suggests, Albert — still reeling from the loss of his father and the discovery that his uncle Leopold might actually be his old man — acts out by skinny dipping. Mon Dieu! And Victoria is having none of it. “Is that conduct becoming for the husband of the Queen of England?” she scolds.

Elsewhere, the flirtation between Victoria’s friend Lord Alfred and Peel’s secretary Drummond looks like it’s heating up. (“I’m prepared to be led into temptation. How about you, Drummond?” Mon Dieu again.) Given that the series is set in the 1840s, it’s unlikely that these two will ride off in the sunset together. However, I think Victoria deserves kudos for portraying a non-contemporary same-sex romance that isn’t solely defined by pain or shame.

Now, if only Victoria would offer the same nuance to its downstairs crew. If Skerrett et al. have this week off, hopefully they’ll use it to sort some things out.

Here’s the synopsis for tonight’s “Entente Cordiale” (aka cordial agreement), courtesy of PBS:

"Victoria decides to try her hand at foreign relations, and takes the royal court on an adventure to France, stepping toe-to-toe with the cunning King of the French, Louis Philippe."
