Game of Thrones season 8: Will everyone be satisfied with the ending?
Could Game of Thrones’ ending leave some fans wanting more or wanting a different story entirely? That’s possible, per Maisie Williams.
In recent years, we’ve seen how quickly fans are able to turn on once-beloved franchises. Star Wars has a director who’s taken to Twitter to take photos in reference to his choices with The Last Jedi. There’s a petition asking Warner Bros. for the Zack Snyder version of Justice League. Even Marvel fans disagree with some of the company’s decisions — lately it’s been, we kid you not, the apparent decision that Inhumans won’t see a second season. And now, thanks to comments from Maisie Williams found by our sister site Winter is Coming, we worry that Game of Thrones might be next on the list (or at least on the list … 2019 seems very far away at this point).
Frankly, with a show that has inspired such a huge fan community that also loves its theories and predictions, it almost seems inevitable. This fanbase isn’t quiet about what it likes when it comes to Game of Thrones, as WiC itself notes when it calls the fanbase “passionate.” It’s also not quiet when it comes to things that it does not like about the show. That’s honestly not a bad thing in the abstract. Criticism, when thoughtful and warranted, leads to some interesting discourse.
A year before we’ll likely see anything of season 8, Williams has said, “It depends on what people want from the final season.” She even said, “It’s either going to be everything that everyone dreamed of, or it’s gonna be disappointing.” Granted, modern fandom often seems like it’s all or nothing, so we can’t blame her for putting things in such stark terms, pun intended.
Of course, she also praised it herself, so perhaps we’re just worrying overmuch. But it is hard to see your theories possibly dashed against the rocks of whatever Game of Thrones will decide is canon.
In short, with these words in mind, it might be time to start preparing now for Game of Thrones to simply go for it in season 8. Whether or not that turns out to be good or bad might very well be up to individual fans.
