The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story will premiere this evening, and here’s what you need to know going into tonight’s episode.

It’s a good night to curl up with something deliciously dramatic and even mildly (very mildly) educational, since The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story is, in fact, based on a true story. Granted, it’s not the big cultural event of the ’90s that the trial of O.J. Simpson was, but it does allow Ryan Murphy to cast Penélope Cruz as Donatella Versace, so there’s that.

Anyway, “The Man Who Would be Vogue” should introduce us not only to our title character, fashion designer Gianni Versace, but his sister, Donatella; his killer, Andrew Cunanan; and his partner, Antonio D’Amico. As with The People vs. O.J. Simpson, those people are being brought to life by some rather well-known actors: Versace himself is Edgar Ramirez, Darren Criss has Andrew Cunanan, and Ricky Martin is Antonio D’Amico.

Meanwhile, the FX schedule has posted a very simple synopsis of the episode:

"The murder of Gianni Versace turns the eyes of the world onto Miami Beach."

We’ll admit that using the word murder is probably a better encapsulation of what actually happened in Miami Beach in 1997, but assassination sounds so much more dramatic, and we really can’t blame the show for picking that word instead because of how well it rolls off the tongue.

However, we could be wrong. Maybe it’ll be made quite obvious why the production chose that word rather than the more pedestrian murder. (Yes, in this context, murder is practically ho-hum. Passé, even.)

Regardless, we’re excited to see how this season stacks up next to The People vs. O.J. Simpson.
