After a month long wait, filled with bomb cyclones, frigid winter temps, and the ridiculous concept of “cuffing season,” Riverdale returns to a killer-free season. This premiere finds less whodunnit, as the Southside Serpents land at Riverdale High School. There’s a turf war brewing among the youngsters, but there’s still plenty of grown up drama to be had. Alice Cooper reunites with her long lost son Chick, who could still turn out to be a serial killer. Hiram Lodge inserts himself into his daughter’s love life with a foot race with Archie, and the Mayor turns her nose up at everybody, embarrassing Josie with her snootiness.
Ah, we missed you, Riverdale.
Now that the Black Hood has, presumably been caught, Riverdale has room to catch us up on all those dangling threads that have been unraveling the storyline since the beginning. Veronica is now a corporate baroness, and Betty and her mother seem like they might be getting a little closer. Hopefully Polly is getting close to delivering those incest twins. The poor girl has been pregnant for what seems like a year.
In terms of the impending class warfare that will result from combining Southside and Riverdale, of course Archie and Jughead will be the de facto heads of each side. As such, they will obviously be pitted against each other, and I can’t say it’s a smart move for the story. I really don’t need another reason to root against for Archie and his lunkheaded tendencies.
