Celeste Ng

You may remember author Celeste Ng’s first novel, Everything I Never Told You. Her debut novel ended up at number one on Amazon’s Favorite Books of 2014. Fast forward to 2017, and Ng has done it again. She’s created true literary fire with Little Fires Everywhere. The book undoubtedly needs its own movie, and we vote Ng write the screenplay.

Little Fires Everywhere is set in Shaker Heights, Ohio in the ’90s. The novel tells a story intertwining racial tensions and the intricacies of family and class. The timing of this novel couldn’t correspond more perfectly with issues facing our nation today.  We guarantee Ng’s writing will have you considering your own views on touchy and often overlooked topics. Start with this book, if one of your resolutions is to read more in 2018.

Samira Wiley

Season 5 of Orange is the New Black was hard to swallow without the feisty, well-read, and ultra-passionate Poussey Washington, portrayed by Samira Wiley. But Wiley didn’t stay out of the game for long and returned to television as Moira in the first season of Hulu’s The Handmaid’s Tale. She nabbed a Primetime Emmy nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama series for her role as Moira, the rebellious best friend of the show’s main character, Offred. She is a graduate of Julliard and an outspoken member and supporter of the LGBTQ community.

Wiley’s talent is rooted in her ability to successfully portray relatable characters dealing with relevant issues, like police brutality and the control of women. Wiley educates viewers who are unaware these problems exist so prominently in our political climate today. If we can’t get Poussey back on OITNB, then it’s the year for Samira Wiley to have her own show!
