It’s finally time to say goodbye to Peter Capaldi’s Doctor on Doctor Who. So all need to prepare our emotions. Here’s everything you need to know to watch “Twice Upon a Time” online.

Whether we’re ready or not, it’s happening. The end of an era is here. The annual Doctor Who holiday installment is upon us, which means that Peter Capaldi’s run as the Doctor is about to come to an end. It also means that it’s time to say goodbye to showrunner and head writer Steven Moffat, who’s written some of the series’ most popular stories. (And some of its most controversial ones, depending on who you ask.) This is also the episode that will see the official debut of Jodie Whittaker as the Thirteenth Doctor, who will be the first woman to play the role. Ever. So, to say that there’s a lot going on is kind of an understatement.
Entitled “Twice Upon a Time,” the Doctor Who Christmas episode features An Adventure in Space and Time star David Bradley as the First Doctor, in a story that somehow sees Twelve somehow running into his earliest incarnation during a pivotal moment in both their timelines. Thanks to some timey-wimeyness, the two seem to be stuck in some kind of frozen moment, in the middle of World War I.
The official BBC synopsis reads as follows:
"Two Doctors stranded in a forbidding snowscape, refusing to face regeneration. A British army captain, seemingly destined to die in the First World War but taken from the trenches to play his part in the Doctor’s story. In the final chapter of the Twelfth Doctor’s epic adventure, he must face his past to decide his future. Along the way he realises the resilience of humanity, discovering hope in his darkest frozen moment. It is the end of an era, but the Doctor’s journey is only just beginning."
And the trailer certainly makes the Christmas special look pretty epic:
BBC America also released a clip in which Moffat, companion Pearl Mackie and guest star/sometime Doctor Who writer Mark Gatiss introduce “Twice Upon a Time” and talk a little bit about what to expect.
