Game of Thrones season 8 spoilers: ‘What is dead may never die’

Sometimes, Game of Thrones may seem like it’s killed off characters, but sometimes, there’s hope, and new reports suggest that’s true for some old faces.

“What is dead may never die, but rises again, harder and stronger.” They aren’t the words of House Greyjoy on Game of Thrones, but the Drowned God’s religion reigns strong in the Iron Islands … and even some of its less, shall we say, steeped devotees seem to be benefiting from it in season 8. Per Winter is Coming, our sister site, and Watchers on the Wall

Neither Yara nor Theon Greyjoy are dead. Granted, we were more worried about Yara than Theon, all things considered. After all, we didn’t see Ellaria Sand die, but we knew she was dead (even if Indira Varma had to talk about it in public to make sure the fans got the point). It was hard to avoid wondering if Game of Thrones was setting Theon up for failure by letting him hope that his sister was still alive … and killing off another fascinating female character one season after Olenna Tyrell.

But things like captivity often come with serious changes for characters in this show. It happened with Theon himself in earlier seasons; Sansa found herself changed after her time King’s Landing, The Eyrie and even Winterfell as Ramsay Bolton’s wife. It’s tough to say whether Yara will go or have gone, as the case may be, through similar as a result of her time as Euron Greyjoy’s captive, but information as to what’s being said in this scene, or what they look like, is a mystery. All Watchers and WiC know is that the two characters are on a ship somewhere.

So, even though Yara may very well live, don’t expect her to be the same Yara who was pretty into Daenerys …

Okay, we hope that’s still the same. But anything else is completely up for grabs.
