Gunpowder’s back tonight with a middle episode that should put the two characters you probably knew about before the show together finally.

Note: In case you missed the first episode of Gunpowder, which aired last night, the Culturess review is right this way.

Gunpowder, to be completely honest, was more than a little slow in last night’s premiere, aside from the scenes that built up tension (or just involved death; violence is a great way to get a viewer’s attention back). And yet, here we are, back for another round of this series, hoping that it might improve and get to the actual planning of the actual attempt to kill the king of England.

… We make no promises on that part.

Especially not after seeing what appears as the synopsis on HBO’s schedule, but really looks like a summary of the entire episode:

"Catesby and his close friend Thomas Wintour travel to mainland Europe to seek the assistance of the Catholic King of Spain, but the brutal actions of the King’s representative, the Constable of Castile, force Catesby to find allegiances in his own country. In England, Lord Cecil enlists a spy, and puts pressure on Catesby’s cousin Anne Vaux, in hopes of determining Catesby’s whereabouts. In Flanders, Catesby and Wintour are introduced to Guy Fawkes, whose expertise in logistics and explosives could prove helpful. Returning to England, Catesby and his supporters work out the logistics for a bold plan to overthrow King James."

Hey, wait, it does say “work out the logistics for a bold plan to overthrow King James.” Hope springs eternal, it seems. Still, it seems as though this is a lot to set up before we actually get to the bit everyone knows. Then again, that might very well be the whole point — that a lot can go into the tiniest of events (or the kinds of events that don’t go as planned).

After all, if the poor dead priest hadn’t dropped that piece of metal, William Wade would have likely found him and his fellow priests anyway by finding their hiding places … and one suspects that that will be just the first of many examples to be found in Gunpowder.
