One episode before the season finale of The Exorcist, the demon has escaped the exorcism and has Andy’s family in its clutches.

Things aren’t looking good in this episode of The Exorcist, but then again, when are they ever?

This time Andy and his entire family are in worse danger than ever, and it seems our exorcists are struggling to catch up.

Check out the episode promo here:

This trailer mainly focuses on Andy and his kids, and for good reason. In the previous episode, Andy closes in on Rose and Verity while the rest of the kids wait to take the ferry back with them. Without any warning that Andy is at large, it seems that Shelby, Harper and Caleb won’t stand a chance when he comes to round them up. We know this demon targets families, and now it has everything it needs.

“It’s going to be a lot of work. But I like that work.”

Andy’s line is a chilling callback to his heart to heart with Caleb earlier this season. It’s easy to imagine the psychological damage that throwing his own words of comfort in Caleb’s face will have. Luckily, the kids have all proved themselves to be resilient and resourceful; if their scant appearances in the promo are anything to go by, Marcus and Tomas might not be there to help them this time.

In case the creepy abandoned house on the island wasn’t already haunting your nightmares, it seems to be the setting for the worst of Andy’s torments. There could be more backstory on the way about the house’s previous residents, and how a demon is able to stay bound to a place instead of a person — or more accurately, to a rock. It’s an interesting twist on the established lore, much more in line with a haunted house than a demon possession, and I’m interested to see where they’ll go with it.

When last we left off, Mouse had left Bennett in a hospital room to recuperate and set off to reunite with Marcus and Tomas on her own. From the looks of things, they’re going to need her help and more.

After the brutal death in “Darling Nikki,” it’s hard to say how dark the show will go. The Rance family got their happy ending; but in the whole new season, anything goes.
