The penultimate episode of Mr. Robot season 3 airs this week, as the series starts moving the pieces into place for what will likely be a incredibly intense finale.

What that will look like, of course, is anyone’s guess. We know that Elliot received a posthumous email from Trenton last week. This missive not only reminded us, that their friendship was real beyond the goals of fsociety, but offered up some hope that the bleak dystopia we’ve been watching for the past few weeks doesn’t have to be forever. Trenton’s email claims that she figured out a way to undo the original 5/9 hack. We didn’t see the body of her message, so the details on this plan are still pretty hazy.

Perhaps “undo” is the wrong word here anyway. No matter how great Trenton’s plan is, it can’t undo a lot of the awful things brought about by the 5/9 hack. People — including Trenton herself — are still dead. But maybe if Elliot can figure out some way to stop the Dark Army from getting away with everything, that’s the beginning of some kind of atonement.

When it comes to specifics about how this all might go down, the official synopsis is pretty vague. As usual.

"elliot trolls a former ally. mr. robot leaves cryptic txt. tyrell gets new cmds. tbh darlene’s plan is next level risky biz."

However, the episode trailer offers a few more clues about what this episode might entail.

Elliot’s busy setting up a meeting with Whiterose for as yet undetermined reasons that most likely have something to do with whatever was in Trenton’s email. Tyrell is free, but doesn’t appear to be doing so well on his own. And Dom certainly seems convinced that there’s more to his story than meets the eye — at least if that quick clip of her conversation with Darlene is anything to go by. Does she just want to make sure that Tyrell ends up back in jail? Or is she trying to use Darlene to go after other targets, such as Elliot or the Dark Army itself? After all, with so many of the previously loose ends tied up, what more information could Darlene possibly provide to her that isn’t about her brother?

Remember, this is all before we take into account whatever Elliot’s planning or the specifics of what Trenton’s email told him about how the 5/9 hack might be reversed. But given everything that’s happened so far in season 3 — it will involve whatever it is that we least expect.
