A week after hopping to Mars, Supergirl enters the mysterious world of cults. Look below for information on how to watch tonight’s episode.

“Far from the Tree” was a somewhat unusual Supergirl episode. Taking a break from her angst over Mon-El, Kara accompanied J’onn to Mars. There, they discovered that M’gann was leading a resistance movement against the tyrannical White Martians and that J’onn’s father was still alive. In the B-plot, Maggie reached out to her estranged father in an ultimately fruitless effort to gain his acceptance.

This week, it appears that Kara will return to the spotlight. Below, you can read the plot synopsis for “The Faithful”, courtesy of Supergirl.TV:

"CHAD LOWE GUEST STARS — Kara (Melissa Benoist) investigates a secretive new group whose leader, Thomas Coville (guest star Chad Lowe), has a mysterious connection to Supergirl. Meanwhile, Samantha (Odette Annable) feels like she’s letting Ruby (guest star Emma Tremblay) down, and J’onn (David Harewood) confesses an old secret."

On the surface, nothing about that description is especially exciting. It suggests a filler episode – one that does little to advance the season’s overarching narrative.

But the trailer for “The Faithful” promises something weird and fun. So far, season 3 has been fairly serious, and we would love for the show to get back in touch with its goofy side – even just for an episode. While Supergirl can pull off grandeur (e.g. “For the Girl Who Has Everything”), it is most endearing in Buffy the Vampire Slayer mode: the plot is essentially a pretext for banter and character beats. In other words, there is less world-saving and more team-building. (Which is really to say there hasn’t been nearly enough Winn this season.)
