In the upcoming episode of Empire, Bella turns one, Cookie initiates a war between Empire’s top artists and Hakeem may be about to murder a classic song (not in a good way, either).

I was actually pleasantly surprised to learn that Wednesday’s episode of Empire will feature a tribute to “The Purple One” himself, Prince.

According to a press release from Fox, the episode will revolve around Cookie trying to bring the best out of her artists for Empire’s 20-for-20. Meanwhile the family prepares to celebrate Baby Bella’s first birthday. Is she really a year old already? It seems like only yesterday Lucious was ready to throttle Boo Boo Kitty for having a girl.

"The race is on when Cookie announces that the number one album for Empire’s 20-For-20 will be a competition between all of the label’s top artists, giving Jamal a bold idea for his newest song. On the heels of Bella’s first birthday, the family plans a special “Prince and Princesses”-themed birthday party, including a special Prince tribute, but the special day brings back haunting memories for one of the Lyons. Meanwhile, Lucious is at a crossroads, as he tries to put to rest the anger from his past life in the all-new “Bleeding War” episode of EMPIRE airing Wednesday, Oct. 18 (8:00-9:00 PM ET/PT) on FOX. (EMP-404) (TV-14 D, L, V)"

Here are your sneak peeks:

Video clips show Cookie asking artists to bring out their passion in order to be the album that launches 20-for-20. I want to know what’s up Jamal’s sleeve for his latest song — especially since he didn’t seem to be here for Cookie’s whole fight to the death mantra at first. Show of hands, who thinks Jamal’s new song will be somehow related to his relationship with Warren? Guess we’ll find out Wednesday.

We also get to see Tiana being her fierce self with her latest song, “Sexxy On ‘Em.” I’ll be honest, if I were Cookie, based solely off the strength of this song, Tiana wouldn’t be my choice to launch 20-for-20. But Tiana is who I imagine I’d be if I were fierce and super sexy.  I always enjoy living vicariously through her performances.

Okay, I’m going to try to type this next part without laughing. According to the preview clips, Hakeem is going to perform Prince’s “Let’s Go Crazy” at Bella’s party.

Pause for reaction…

I’ll be honest, I’m no Prince stan. Don’t get me wrong, I love his music and will listen to “Purple Rain” every day. But I didn’t have the emotional attachment to Prince and his songs that other people had.

Nevertheless, I know enough about Prince to know that “Let’s Go Crazy” was one of his best known songs. Hakeem has never been a singer, and I’m not sure what a rap version of this song would sound like or if it would be any good, so I’m kind of biting my nails over this one.

The final video clip shows a (sober) Angelo, trying to turn Anika against the Lyons. At this point, it’s hard to believe anyone could stop Anika in her quest to be part of the Lyon Clan. The FBI couldn’t even do it.

That being said, Anika has more in common with the DuBois family than the Lyons. For example, they all come from privileged backgrounds and they all hate Cookie.  I’m not ruling out that those similarities will soften Anika to their plight, even if Diana did let her stew in a jail cell and miss out on most of her daughter’s first year of life.
