Game of Thrones season 8: How much is Davos Seaworth involved?

With new word from Liam Cunningham, it’s time to inquire about the role Davos Seaworth has left to play in the last season of Game of Thrones.

To close out a week that involved Lena Headey signaling she’s about ready to get started with Game of Thrones season 8 comes the most concrete news yet, via io9. Ser Davos Seaworth himself, Liam Cunningham, says that the cast will come together to read through half of the first season starting on Sunday. io9’s not specific about the actual dates, but our sister site, Winter is Coming, is. WiC has it as kicking off by Oct. 19 the latest, and adds that actually, the entire season will have been read by next week Monday.

Obviously, Davos is going to play a supportive role in season 8. It’s really not that much of a surprise. Even though Jon’s now taken a step down, that doesn’t mean he loses his retinue and his need for help. Davos isn’t going to disappear.

(At least we hope he doesn’t, because Liam Cunningham has some great, understated humor to pair with his more serious scenes. Remember his trip with Jon to Dragonstone?)

The question really is how much of Davos will we see? He has the scripts, which both WiC and io9 explicitly confirm, but that doesn’t necessarily mean he’s speaking in every single episode. Even last season, not everyone got a scene or a line in every episode.

Additionally, he’s now competing with the entirety of Daenerys’ orbit as well for screentime. He still provides something that they really don’t in his sailing experience, but will that be in demand this season? Frankly, perhaps it’s time for Davos to look beyond Jon and to the other living Starks. How cool would it be for him to work with the sisters a little more?

That’s probably just wishful thinking, though.

So is Davos sitting Jon down and trying to warn him that getting involved with a slightly-magical lady does always not end well. I mean, I’ve predicted it’ll end well, but Davos has the life experience from serving Stannis, who was involved with Melisandre.

Then again, Davos finding out could be an excellent scene for him to share with Tyrion.
