The introduction of Forest Whitaker’s character Uncle Eddie and Cookie becoming wary of Nurse Claudia are on the menu for tonight’s episode of Empire!
After a smoldering season premiere last week, Empire returns Wednesday at 8 p.m. as the Lyons continue their efforts to survive and thrive without Lucious helming the family as patriarch, artistic genius and chief schemer.
Nurse Claudia Gets the Side-Eye from Cookie
Video clips of the episode show Cookie moving into Lucious’ home and beginning to keep a closer eye on Nurse Claudia. Cookie also reveals that although Empire is remaining afloat and turning a profit, they are getting dangerously close to having to liquidate the company’s assets to survive, a prospect that is unnerving to Empire’s investors.
Give Becky Her Due, Empire!
Becky is job-searching, thinking that since Cookie is looking for a permanent A&R person, she will more than likely be replaced. I really want Becky to get what’s hers this season. She seems to have been with Empire, if not from the very beginning, then at least for a significant part of the company’s two-decade existence. As we saw last year, Becky has a good ear and a lot of Tiana’s success can probably be equally attributed to both Becky and Cookie.
The Return of an Old Friend
This is the scene that probably has me the most excited. The character of Uncle Eddie, played by Oscar-winner Forest Whitaker, gets introduced tonight. According to Variety, Eddie is a radio DJ who was one of the first people in the music business to give Lucious a shot. He will also be the first person outside of the immediate Lyon family (and Tiana) to learn about Lucious’ memory loss.
Variety had this to say about the character:
"Whitaker will play Uncle Eddie, a charismatic music icon and bonafide hitmaker, who gave an unknown Lucious (Terrence Howard) his first radio airplay years ago. Decades later, Eddie steps up for Lucious at a critical moment during his rehabilitation, and a grateful Cookie (Taraji P. Henson) invites him to produce a song in celebration of Empire Entertainment’s 20th anniversary."
We haven’t gotten a chance to see Anika yet, but if Diana has had anything to say about it (we know she has) she is still suffering in jail. In the same vein, the DuBois clan is noticeably absent from previews of the episode thus far. However, Warren, Jamal’s love interest who has been consorting with Diana, is briefly present in the episode. I’m still not sure of Warren’s motives, but he seems to be developing a soft spot for Jamal, which will be interesting once we learn how Diana is planning to use him to destroy one of Cookie’s sons.

While it seams the majority of this episode will focus on Lucious once again, I’m sure we’ll have plenty of material to move the other plot points along. Be sure to catch Empire tonight at 8/7c on FOX!
