Outlander season 3, episode 2: Watch online

Claire and Frank play house, Jamie retreats to a cave, and Outlander’s love triangle gets even more complicated in “Surrender.”

As Leo Tolstoy began his epic novel Anna Karenina: “All happy families are alike; each unhappy family is unhappy in its own way.” I like to think that Anne Kenney had this quote in the back of her mind as she was writing “Surrender,” this week’s installment of Outlander. Claire is building a new family with Frank and Brianna, while Jamie is back with his sister’s family and Fergus at Lallybroch. Their domestic experiences are quite different but, you guessed it, neither of our heroes is anywhere close to being happy.

In fact, Claire visibly flinches when Frank refers to himself as the baby’s “daddy” and Jamie is so depressed he lives in a cave and grows a terrible beard. And, per “Surrender’s” promo video, that’s just the tip of the iceberg. Jamie has become such a recluse that his sister, Jenny, urges him to find a woman, any woman, to keep him company. Poor Frank just wishes his marriage didn’t involve a dead Highlander from the 18th century.

Clearly, the drama Tolstoy cooked up for Anna, Vronsky, and Karenin has nothing on Outlander.

As “Surrender’s” TV Guide synopsis reads:

"Jamie leads a lonely life hidden in a cave until Lallybroch is threatened by redcoats pursuing the elusive Jacobite traitor. In Boston, Claire and Frank struggle to coexist in a marriage haunted by the ghost of Jamie."
