The dueling coasters will be no more. The Dragon Challenge demise is an another example of classic coaster being replaced.
As you enter Hogsmeade at Universal’s Islands of Adventure, Dragon Challenge sits off to the side. The entrance, a little hidden, still beckons riders with the twists and turns of two steel coasters. In a few weeks, this classic coaster will thrill no more. The Dragon Challenge demise is a disappointment for coaster thrill-seekers.
For another year, Universal Islands of Adventure was named the best theme park in the world. From the Wizarding World of Harry Potter to the gigantic steel Hulk coaster, the park entertains at the highest level. Announced recently, Universal will be replacing the classic Dragon Challenge for another Harry Potter ride. While details aren’t specific, the Universal Parks Blog said the new “entire family” ride will have riders “encounter” Harry Potter characters and creatures. Also, the ride will “redefine the category” with “exciting adventures” from the Universal Creative Team.
I have no doubt that Universal will create an impressive new Harry Potter ride. It is what Universal does. But, saying good-bye to the Dragon Challenge is bittersweet. For steel roller coaster fans, the park becomes limited.
Part of the original 1999 opening, Dueling Dragons, as it was first called, was the must-ride. The two intertwined tracks had the coaster cars start simultaneously. Riders felt that they could almost touch the other riders as they zoomed past. After complaints and incidents, the cars are now staggered.
As a steel coaster, the Dragon Challenge was reaching the end of its life. These type of coasters do require a large overhaul towards the end of their lifespan. Recently, Hulk received that re-haul. While the track stayed intact, the cars were improved.
With Dragon Challenge going away, the only real thrilling steel coaster at Islands of Adventure is Hulk. The many other thrill rides incorporate simulators. While simulator rides are fun, these type of attractions are not for everyone. Personally, simulator rides can make me nauseous. Maybe my brain doesn’t like the technological manipulation to my perception.
While the details on the new ride are limited, my guess is that the new adventure will feature some type of simulation. The new Jimmy Fallon ride is a simulator. Based on the location and size of the Fast and Furious: SUPERCHARGE build, this ride will probably include simulation.
Given the location in Hogsmeade, the area has lots of possibilities. Leaving Dragon Challenge, you can see Hogwarts in the distance. The ride’s entrance is towards the front of Hogsmeade, close to the Owl Post. But, a new free standing roller coaster won’t happen. Another simulator type ride is a strong possibility.
These type of rides are popular because they can be a family ride. Height limitations can be lower on these rides. Watching little kids get turned away from Dragon Challenge was sad (but they would get a certificate from staff if they were really upset). A family-inclusive ride provides a more immersive experience for theme park guests and, overall, is better for the theme park itself.
As details about this new ride emerge, excitement and anticipation will continue to grow. The new ride will debut sometime in 2019. Given that the ride is Harry Potter related, fans will be planning their trips as soon as the exact opening date is announced.

Still, the Dragon Challenge demise is sad. Try to have one last ride on this classic coaster before the Sept. 4 closing. Maybe have two rides, one for the red and one for the blue. I’ve never been able to figure out which one is faster.
