For its second-to-last episode, The Leftovers dives down the rabbit hole. We preview “The Most Powerful Man in the World (and His Identical Twin Brother)”.

Is Kevin Garvey a messiah? That’s the question The Leftovers aims to answer in its penultimate episode. Well, maybe we won’t get a definitive answer; mysteries on this show seldom have one. But we will certainly wrestle with the subjectivity of experience and whatnot.

One thing’s for sure: it’s going to be an adventure.

The synopsis for this week’s installment of The Leftovers, called “The Most Powerful Man in the World (and His Identical Twin Brother)”, is below:

"On a mission of mercy, Kevin (Justin Theroux) assumes an alternate identity."

First of all, have you ever seen a more amazing title? If that doesn’t pique your curiosity, I don’t know what will. It’s not without context, though. Episode 5 of this season, “It’s a Matt, Matt, Matt, Matt World”, climaxed with a tense conversation between Matt Jamison and a man named David Burton, who claimed to be God. In reality, Burton said, Jesus died in the cave after his crucifixion. The man people believed to be a resurrected Jesus was actually his identical twin brother.

Here, the title presumably refers to Kevin (and whatever this alternate identity is). His exchange with Laurie last week suggested that he has agreed to go along with his father’s plan to return to the afterlife. What will he find this time? The possibility of another trippy episode along the lines of “International Assassin” is exciting enough, but we’re crossing our fingers for certain dead characters to make an appearance (*cough* Meg *cough*).
