11 Pop Culture Releases You Need to Know About in May
8. Dark Angel
As we stated when we previewed this PBS special earlier this year, the whole appeal of Dark Angel is that it features Downton Abbey’s Joanne Froggatt finally expressing all of Anna’s latent rage by becoming a serial killer and murdering her husbands with poison.
The fun part? Unlike Anna Bates, Mary Ann Cotton was real and supposedly killed way more than just her husbands (and yes, the plural is necessary when it comes to Mary Ann’s matrimonies). A based-on-a-true-story British import period piece airing on PBS hits plenty of different audiences, and when you factor in the Downton connection, this is shaping up to be something that quite a few fanbases will enjoy. We’re pretty certain that this supposedly one-night drama that will leave chills down your spine even as May warms up heading into summer.
Dark Angel will premiere on May 21, so you have time to kill (pun intended this time, we promise) whatever’s been filling up your Sunday nights for now. Besides, so often PBS’ British shows feature the heroes or at least somewhat good people, even if they are “high-functioning sociopaths” like Benedict Cumberbatch’s Sherlock. It’ll be nice to go over to the dark side with Mary Ann Cotton.
