Attention Flash fans: there’s a new episode this week and it looks pretty wild. You can watch it online using our handy live stream information.
This week’s installment of The Flash sure took its time coming. The DC superhero series last aired a new episode on March 28, almost a month ago. To make things worse, it ended on a pair of cliffhangers.
First, Barry declared that he plans to super-speed to the future and get some information about Savitar. Although the show’s history of using time travel has produced mixed results at best, the prospect of going to the future is always a little exciting. Let’s be honest: The Flash acts more like fantasy than science-fiction. That’s not a bad thing, per se, but we’d love to see what it does in an explicitly sci-fi setting.
The other cliffhanger involved Caitlin turning into Killer Frost, as Julian removed her necklace in order to trigger her healing powers. It was distressing and kind of enraging. We’re glad she’s not dead, but it’s not exactly satisfying for Caitlin to finally get a storyline of her own, only to be deprived of her agency. The show’s treatment of Caitlin’s powers stands in stark contrast to its treatment of Barry, Cisco, and Wally’s powers: only she turns into a villain when she uses them.
That said, her romance with Julian is sweet. Maybe this will lead to somewhere interesting, like him helping her control her powers while she helps him recover from the trauma of having been controlled by Savitar.
Anyway, here’s the official synopsis for “The Once and Future Flash,” via The CW:
"Barry (Grant Gustin) travels to the future to find out Savitar’s still unknown identity in the hopes of saving Iris (Candice Patton). Upon his arrival in 2024, Barry encounters future versions of his Team Flash friends, who, following the death of Iris, have become very different people, profoundly impacted by their showdown with Savitar. It will be up to Barry to infuse a sense of hope back into the team, as he proves to be hero his future friends have been waiting for. Meanwhile, back in 2017, the hunt for Killer Frost (Danielle Panabaker) continues."
