4. What are Those Ships?

Again, the shot of these ships zooming over the landscape, leaving red powder in their wake, doesn’t have much in the way of context or explanation just yet. They’re too far away to see any sort of identifying markings, but it doesn’t seem like they’re very friendly, whoever’s flying them.

The more pertinent question is what that powder is doing. Is it itself a weapon? There don’t seem to be any people standing on the surface beneath these ships, so perhaps the intent is to poison the ground itself somehow or otherwise disperse the powder. If it’s the latter, though, wouldn’t they be flying too low to really make any sort of difference in the atmosphere?

Then again, they could be part of a larger assault. The trailer did show one battle out in space, and it wouldn’t be the first time that Star Wars has combined a ground fight with a space one to cut back and forth between the action.

Entertainment Weekly has revealed that this planet has the name Crait, and that those ships above are indeed Resistance ships. However, though they spoke to Rian Johnson to get that information, he wasn’t particularly forthcoming about what it actually is.
