Tunes for Tuesday: Postmodern Jukebox ‘Sledgehammer’

Scott Bradlee’s Postmodern Jukebox has done it again. They have taken a legendary Peter Gabriel song and turned it on its ear.

Fans of Postmodern Jukebox have known for years this band has the goods. Time after time they have taken huge pop, rock, and R&B songs and completely change the arrangement and make the song new again. This time they did it with one of Peter Gabriel most well known hits, ‘Sledgehammer.’

This is the thing with Peter Gabriel songs; not everyone can sing his songs. His voice is iconic and does not lend itself to replication. The same can be said about the song ‘Sledgehammer.’ Most covers come out contrived and way off the mark. What Scott Bradlee and his team of musicians have done is nothing short of amazing. We shouldn’t be all that shocked since Postmodern Jukebox has been doing this for years but they manage to charm us with every video.

Take a look at the video for the vintage 50’s R & B cover of ‘Sledgehammer.’

As a Peter Gabriel purest we have to say this is incredible stuff. If the young man singing lead vocals looks familiar, it’s because he’s Noah Guthrie. He was cast as Roderick on Glee‘s final season. Guthrie is not unfamiliar with changing a song up and making it new again. He caught the attention of Glee and late night shows with his blues cover of LMFAO’s ‘Sexy and I Know It.’

‘Sledgehammer’ is just the latest contribution from Postmodern Jukebox. You might have missed last week’s vintage blues Cheap Trick cover of ‘I Want You To Want Me.’

If you haven’t done so already, you should subscribe to Postmodern Jukebox YouTube channel, so you don’t miss a thing.
