The New Books Roundup, March 28: A Crown of Wishes, Vampires, and Also History

facebooktwitterreddit

To close out the month of March, we have three fresh titles, including A Crown of Wishes, the next Argeneau book, and a little historical romance as well.

Yes, it really is the end of March. Saturday’s April Fools’ Day. However, just because the month is ending doesn’t mean there’s no time for some fresh books for your to-read pile. Whether or not they jump to the top of the list is completely up to you, but these three titles all look really solid, just saying.

The usual rules apply here: we link to Amazon, we summarize with the help of Amazon, and we offer some slightly playful commentary in the summaries.

A Crown of Wishes

In January, we listed 12 science fiction and fantasy books that we were keeping an eye on for the year. We bring this up because Roshani Chokshi’s followup to The Star-Touched Queen made it onto the list. It’s not a true sequel, though; A Crown of Wishes instead follows Gauri, sister to Maya, as she participates in the Tournament of Wishes with Vikram. Of course, there’s a little bit of romance involved, as was the case with Star-Touched. Goodreads ratings look to be strong out of the gate. St. Martin’s Griffin; hardcover, 384 pages; list price: $18.99.

An Extraordinary Union

Alyssa Cole appears to have kicked off a new series, if the Amazon listing is accurate. An Extraordinary Union takes readers to the Civil War and introduces us to Elle Burns, who returns to the South in order to spy for the North and Malcolm McCall, one of Allan Pinkerton’s agents trying to do the same. But of course, there’s “undeniable attraction,” to quote Amazon’s description, and who doesn’t like a bit of danger to go with their romance reading? Check it out on Goodreads. Kensington; paperback, 320 pages; list price: $15.00.

Immortal Unchained

There are many, many books in Lynsay Sands’ Argeneau series; this happens to be the latest. Our heroine is Sarita, a cop, and meanwhile, we have Domitian (he’s the titular immortal, in case the fact that his name is given as Domitian Argenis in the description). Domitian’s kidnapped, and Sarita finds herself in the lair of the same doctor who’s taken him prisoner. That’s just how things start. Goodreads confirms that this is the twenty-fifth novel in Sands’ series, by the way, though Amazon’s description gives the number as 22 instead. Avon; mass market paperback, 400 pages; list price: $7.99.

Jessica Shattuck’s newest novel, The Woman in the Castle, is out today.  Laini Taylor’s latest, Strange the Dreamer, has also arrived.

There’s a lot to read this week, honestly! Have you caught up, or will you save these titles for April?
