16. She’s willing to compromise

To be a queen, you’ve got to have good friends. And sometimes a good friend will just show up at your doorstep when you least expect it. Recall this scene from Season 6’s “Battle of the Bastards.” Yara and Theon Greyjoy finally complete their journey from the Iron Islands, ending up on Dany’s front doorstep. There’s only the slightest bit of tension in the air (at Theon’s expense, of course), but it’s clear the Dragon Queen has sniffed out a deal. Sure enough, Yara can offer ships if Dany can secure her place on the Salt Throne. Done and done.

It’s important for any great leader to know where to draw the line when it comes to negotiation. Dany has slowly but surely made her goals clear about what she deems a prosperous society. In order to give the Greyjoys power, she had to stand firm on her beliefs that raping and pillaging would be against the law under her reign. Since Yara is also a smart woman, she knew she wasn’t getting a better deal than that, so she shook on it.

There have been plenty of times Dany has had to take things by force when her enemies weren’t willing to compromise. That’s going to have to happen from time to time, and any great leader knows that. But we have enough confidence in Dany that she’ll find the proper times to speak and fight. And as it turns out, the internet went wild for this scene, mostly because the chemistry between Yara and Dany is off the charts. Yara said she’s “up for anything, really,” another area the internet hopes Dany can find compromise. Wink wink.
