25. Ego, the Living Planet

Okay, if you’ve made it this far, then you deserve something of a “spoiler”. I say “spoiler”, because Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 creators have already told everyone about actor Kurt Russell’s character and his relation to Star-Lord. Apparently, the revelation that Ego the Living Planet was Star-Lord’s dad isn’t quite the crux of the plot. If it is, then this is trolling on an entirely new level.

So, who is this Living Planet guy, anyway? To a certain extent, he does right what it says on the box. There are no euphemisms here; Ego really is a planet that has gained sentience. How, exactly, he could father a child will probably, hopefully be explained in the new Guardians of the Galaxy movie.

Ego is somewhat self-centered. T again, he’s one of the only living planets that we know of, so perhaps that’s forgivable. Like so many cosmic beings in the Marvel universe, he tends to move between threatening and helpful. He helps Earth-level superheroes many times. On one occasion, he allowed a species to live on his surface after their planet was consumed by Galactus.

Ego the Living Planet has the ability to shapeshift and terraform his surface at will. That’s why he often has a humanoid face on his surface while communicating with others. He also has considerable psionic powers, along with a highly emotional nature and an unfortunately susceptibility to brainwashing.
