Because Scandal needs to introduce another suspect, it seems like the perfect time to visit our old friend, Jake Ballard. The last time we saw him, he escaped Eli Pope’s clutches and became Mellie’s running mate. Then, he made a man wet his pants — and, poof! He’s gone.

But tonight’s episode will focus on his marriage during the campaign. So let’s check out the synopsis for the new episode, “They All Bow Down”:

"The campaign is in jeopardy thanks to Jake and Vanessa and their chaotic relationship, so Olivia must take action. Meanwhile, a dramatic revelation concerning Francisco Vargas’ assassination comes to light."

As you can see, this is the moment that Vanessa became suspicious of Jake’s relationship with Olivia. Obviously, he had a long relationship with her and even entertained the idea of leaving it all behind to join her in the sun. Unfortunately, they always ended up back in Rowan’s camp, where he forced Jake into a marriage with Vanessa that earned him the position of Head of the NSA.
