Girls Season 6, Episode 4 Live Stream: Watch “Painful Evacuations” Online
By Emily Scott
Girls is back on HBO for its sixth and final season. Here’s what you need to know to watch tonight’s episode online.
One of the best things about Girls is its bottle episodes. In some shows, putting the characters in a self-contained story feels weird. But in Girls, they are always my favorites. Such is the case with last week’s episode, “American B*tch,” in which Hannah had a very intense afternoon with a famous author who has been accused of sexual assault.
This episode tackled some incredibly complex and serious topics. And combined with “Hostage Situation,” it seems to indicate that Girls is going in a more serious direction. Simultaneously, in these episodes, we’ve seen Hannah mature a lot. From helping Marnie out of a bad relationship to getting out of a bad situation herself, it seems like Hanna and the Girls are becoming women. At least, in some ways.

Based on the descriptions of tonight’s upcoming episode, it seems the trend will continue. HBO describes the episode, entitled “Painful Evacuation,” via a press release:
"Hannah (Lena Dunham) interviews influential writer Ode Montgomery (Tracey Ullman), who offers eye-opening advice on being a woman and a writer. When Adam (Adam Driver) storms off the set of his latest acting job, Jessa (Jemima Kirke) suggests they embark on a creative endeavor of their own. Ray (Alex Karpovsky) considers the course of his life after a regular at the coffee shop dies suddenly. Marnie (Allison Williams) is confronted with her narcissism."
Hannah getting deep into conversation with an older, wiser female writer seems like a recipe for further insight and maturity from the show’s protagonist. It’ll be very interesting to see how nihilist, pessimist Ray deals with a death that’s so close to home. And Marnie desperately needs to confront her narcissism – it’s what keeps driving her into relationships with men she doesn’t care about.

But more than anything, I can’t wait to see where Jessa and Adam are after that season 5 finale fight. The season 6 episodes have largely stayed away from the pair so far, although clearly, they’re still together. But in the glimpses we’ve had of Jessa, she seems so bizarrely manic and ungrounded. In season 5, she seemed to be headed towards a more settled place. Maybe we will find out what has changed tonight.
