Riverdale isn’t afraid to borrow from the familiar. This week they’re relying on all we know about scary movies: haunted houses, pretty girls who scream, and unsolved mysteries. Here’s what you need to know to watch the Riverdale episode 5 live stream.

If Buffy The Vampire Slayer and Scooby Doo had a baby, and then asked Twin Peaks to be its godfather, that would be Riverdale. It’s so referential, at times you can’t tell from what it’s borrowing and what it actually is.

It’s gritty enough to hold its own with its noir predecessors, but you can’t dispute its healthy doses of camp and schmaltz. I kinda like my thrillers with a fair amount of cheesiness, so Riverdale hits me directly in my sweet spot.

In this week’s “Heart of Darkness,” the gang has to sort out a creepy old mansion, Jason’s memorial, and Archie’s striking resemblance to the dead kid. Jughead ominously narrates us through an episode in which we really don’t need to be told what to think or feel, but we are anyway.

The promo hints at a head in a box when Hermione Granger gets a special package. Although that might just be me drawing more Finchian parallels where none exists.
