Watch the Girls Season 6 Premiere Online
By Emily Scott
It’s time for the return of Hannah Horvath and co.! Girls is coming back to HBO tonight for its final season. Here’s what you need to know to watch it online.
Hannah, Marnie, Jessa, and Shoshanna are back on our screens! The downside is, this time we know it’s the beginning of the end. Season 6 will be the last season of Girls, and I, for one, am deeply saddened. I know the show is controversial, but there’s no denying its impact. Girls has been truly groundbreaking in the way that it represents women (i.e. as fully realized people). For all the criticism, some rightful and some ridiculous, I’m in the camp that it’s a net-good for humanity. And seeing it end will be disappointing.
But the good news is, we have a whole season to look forward to! And, because Lena Dunham and co. knew that this would be the last season, the end is probably well-concieved and well-written. Our girls have already gone through so much development and progress. I mean, last season’s finale ended with Hannah running! When we left her, she was still processing and coping the fact that Jessa is dating Adam now. But because of her story at The Moth, we have reason to believe she’s maturing.

And remember that happy couple? In last season’s finale, Jessa and Adam displayed the truly scary parts of them as they argued about Hannah. They literally destroyed Adam’s apartment, showing very physically how unhealthy their relationship is. Meanwhile, Shoshanna is killing it. For years she was confused about what she wanted to do with her life. But it seems like she has a real knack for brand management. Marnie and Desi are on tour, as musicians, with Ray accompanying Marnie. And don’t forget the fact that Hannah’s dad is gay!
So as far as what we can expect tonight, here’s the TVGuide description of the episode. “In the Season 6 premiere, Hannah goes to the Hamptons to write a story about a surf camp for women, where she hits it off with the laid-back instructor. Meanwhile, Marnie’s divorce from Desi opens a door for Ray, who bristles at her intention to close it when it suits her.”

Sounds right to us. A major treat though is that Riz Ahmed guest stars as the surf instructor. I’m super excited to see him again after his amazing work in The Night Of and Rogue One. My guess is this will be similar to the Patrick Wilson episode. Hannah, when out of her element, finds someone to cling to. But she ultimately realizes her relationship with that person is unsustainable. And I’m so glad Marnie is getting a divorce. But I also get why Ray is frustrated with her. Marnie needs to spend some time by herself, I think. But in order to do that, she has to stop manipulating Ray and really think about what she wants.
