Elizabeth and King George VI

When we see the monarchs on television or read about them in history books, we get very little information about their personal relationships. Unless you’re Charles and Diana. Or really any of the more modern members of the Royal family. But what The Crown (and to an extent The King’s Speech) does is give us a look at Albert as a father and how he treats Elizabeth.

With flashbacks and the little glimpses of Albert before he died, we see the kind of father he was to Elizabeth and Margaret. In The King’s Speech, we also have scenes where he addresses his daughters and seems like a man who is head over heels in love with his kids.

That same love carries over into The Crown and it gives us moments when he tells Margaret and Elizabeth to never turn their backs on each other like David did to him. Or when he gives Elizabeth a camera on her wedding day and tells her to capture everything because he hoped her marriage and family made her as happy as his did for him.

It is a very sweet dynamic that many never get to see when it comes to the Royal family and though it is fictionalized, it still gives us a new warmth towards the monarchs we know and love.
