27. Padmé’s Wedding Dress

Congratulations, you’ve made it to the end of AOTC! Your reward: seeing Padmé’s wedding gown. The, ahem, romantic lighting makes it somewhat difficult to see all of the detailing, but Dressing a Galaxy swoops in to save the day.

A vintage lace bedspread provided the initial appliqués, with an additional 300 yards of French-knit braid with Cornely scrollwork also applied to put together the eleven separate panels of silk tulle. The entire ensemble is also studded with pearls. The veil also has a different lace pattern (186-89).

Once again, Padmé dons white, with her hair also loose again as opposed to up. Remember, the Senator wears a lot of dark colors. Padmé generally tends not to, and also has her hair down more often than she does formally. Moreover, the sleeves are actually sheer, again not something we really see from Padmé. However, her shoulders do get exposed on Naboo in two cases, with one exception for a nightgown in ROTS.

In other words, this moment allows her to break a lot of the rules she sets for herself in formal life, but still present a very royal look. (For example, here’s Queen Victoria’s wedding gown in a portrait, since Dressing a Galaxy identifies the Victorian era as a major influence in terms of design principles for the prequel trilogy.)
