28. Sabé Amidala

Weirdly enough, the doll featuring this outfit says that a) Queen Amidala wears this dress, when you can pretty clearly see Natalie Portman to the left of this handmaiden, and b) it’s for the “ultimate hair” doll, when this is referred to as “Battle Dress” in the Dressing a Galaxy index. Second fun fact: this is a young Keira Knightley, kicking off almost twenty years of confusion between the two.

In fact, it is actually battle dress, as it’s what Sabé wears right before the Battle of Naboo kicks off. She’s speaking to Boss Nass of the Gungans right before Padmé reveals herself as the actual queen.

However, because this is Queen Amidala, she must look the part and have a ridiculous headdress. You can just spot the elaborate designs on the red hairpieces, because even when a battle is about to happen, the queen must have something pretty.

At least the dress itself is actually quite practical, and, as you can see here, clearly calls back to the handmaidens’ in terms of shape and neckline. In fact, the hem doesn’t even reach the ground or floor! She can actually run around in it if she needs to, and she has practical boots on as well to facilitate said running.

It’s memorable because it’s the dress worn when Padmé gives the game up and reveals herself as the queen, and so it is a dress that the queen wears when something actually happens and thus warrants a costume change.
